Information for families
Your child will receive information and advice about employability and careers during their time at the HOE. Opportunities to develop life skills and core competencies that are valued by employers are present in all aspects of the curriculum.
How can you help your child with careers and employability?
Here are some of the things you can do to support your child:
Show a genuine interest in their next steps, ensuring you are listening and holding back on advising.
Talk to them often about their ideas for their next steps and ask them what they see themselves doing.
Discuss your jobs, schooling and career path, highlighting what these experiences have taught you.
Take your child to work one day (during school holidays)
Look at the local colleges, day centres and Post 16 providers websites with them, to see what courses are available and how this could link to future careers.
Explore the CareerCompanion website with them to discover a wealth of material that is aimed at supporting futures, including information relating to employers, apprenticeship providers and further education courses in the local area.
Visit local providers for open days and careers fairs.
Encourage participation in out of school activities, especially volunteering, which supports character development, self-esteem and resilience.
Remind them that they are able to discuss careers and their future with trusted adults at school.
