Our Reading Project
The promotion of reading for pleasure is something that all English staff
feel passionately about at HOE and this is supported by SLT and all staff
as a whole school initiative. These initiatives are reviewed annually to
ensure that we maintain the students’ interest. These include a timetable
of events such as individual reading challenges, competitions with their
peers and involving staff, national initiatives and competitions as well
as independent reading based homework tasks.
This year we have ensured that all students received a book for Christmas
through the ‘Jolabokaflod’ ( Book flood) initiative. We have also updated
our class libraries. Reading has been promoted through class displays and
the swapping of and discussion of books between students is encouraged. We
have introduced ‘Borrow Box’, a free app that anyone can download onto
their mobile phone or device if they are a member of the Northamptonshire
Library Service. The app then allows access to hundreds of age appropriate
ebooks and audiobooks for them to download.
In addition we have lots of reading inspired activities planned for the
rest of the year to maintain the students’ interest and enthusiasm for

HOE shortlisted for Times Educational Supplement Alternative Provision of the Year
Hospital and Outreach Education was delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious award. Although HOE were not successful on this occasion, the fact that we were shortlisted is recognition of the high standard of education provided for Northamptonshire pupils with medical needs.
Hospital and Outreach Education are proud winners of the SEN Provision of the Year for 2017. Awarded at the schools awards celebration at Wicksteed Park on 28th July, everyone in the team was delighted that their contribution to the education of pupils with medical needs had been recognised.
Cath Kitchen was also awarded the ‘Changemaker’ award, sponsored by the University. She was particularly thrilled with being nominated as it was one of the parents who had put her forward for the award.
3 of our pupils were also shortlisted for ‘Taking Control of your Life’ and ‘Special recognition’ Awards in the Youth Ambition Awards. Although they were not successful, we are immensely proud that they were shortlisted and for them to know that all of their hard work and determination has been appropriately acknowledged.
