Welcome message from the Headteacher

The Skylark Partnership Trust and the Hospital and Outreach Education Local Advisory Board, staff and I are delighted to introduce you to the work of our Alternative Provision Academy.

Hospital and Outreach Education AP Academy (HOE) is commissioned by North and West Northamptonshire local authorities to provide educational support for children and young people aged 5 to 18 who cannot attend mainstream school due to a diagnosed complex medical and/or mental health condition: they may be an inpatient at a local hospital or located in the community.

We provide personalised learning and support for pupils so that they are enabled to make rapid progress in their learning and emotional well being. Our teaching and support help our pupils successfully transition back to their home school or the next phase in their learning.

We cannot change our pupil’s past experiences, but we can influence their future by restoring their self-confidence, self-esteem, and giving them the resilience and tools to be able to cope in their chosen educational or vocational destination. We firmly believe that all our pupils can achieve, regardless of their personal circumstances and medical or mental health condition.

Parents cannot apply for their child to attend Hospital and Outreach Education. Referrals are made by their child’s school and are supported by a medical practitioner.

Our Mission – what do we exist to do?

Our mission is to improve outcomes for children and young people who are too unwell to access education in their usual school and require additional support, either in a hospital setting or alternative provision. Our goal is to reintegrate pupils to their usual setting, or other long term provision, where they will be included, with reasonable adjustments if necessary.

  • We will support children and young people
age 5-16 years (up to the end of Year 11) who are unable to attend school due to their physical or mental health condition
  • Post 16 pupils who are in-patients in the hospital settings
  • Post 16 outreach pupils who have missed significant amounts of their key stage 4 education due to their medical/mental health difficulties

Our Vision – What will pupils leave the school knowing, being and having done?

Our pupils will leave us with the academic, social and emotional skills to enable them to access the next stage of their lifelong journey, becoming a fulfilled, happy and successful member of society and making positive contributions to their community.

To do this we will:

  1. provide a safe environment where pupils feel welcome and happy
  2. enable them to make progress and achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally
  3. adopt a nurturing and non judgemental approach rooted in our values curriculum
  4. support pupils’ social and emotional development
  5. give hope to them and their family for an optimistic future
  6. support them to reintegrate back to their usual school community
  7. provide a personalised learning programme
  8. engage in excellent multidisciplinary team work

We will continuously improve our service using regular feedback from all stakeholders to ensure the experience for pupils, parents and staff is the best it can be. In doing this we aim to be nationally recognised as the best medical needs provision in the UK.
